August Sander: A Photographic Force for Good


“Nothing is more hateful to me than photography sugar-coated with gimmicks, poses and false effects. Therefore, let me speak the truth in all honesty about our age and the people of our age, ” August Sander explained once. For Sander, who wrote this in 1927, life must have been one of personal frustration with a volatile environment full of smoke and mirrors about him. Germany during this time was still suffering economic collapse and humiliation after defeat from World War I, and many people were trying to do what they could to survive.

Photography was not only a profession but a way to channel Sander’s art, personal views, and concept of life. He used his craft to capture not only life in Germany, but to give a meticulous account, or record of these lives.
