Let me introduce you to Katarina Kern. On the surface, Katarina (or Kat as she is known to everyone) is the quintessential surfer girl: she has the style down to a T with a year-round tan to match, and loves surfing above anything else. Beyond her appearance and her love for surfing, however, Kat is nothing like the relaxed, casual, slightly chaotic stereotype associated with surfers. Her appearance belies her personality, which is closer to that of the German stereotype: she is a highly efficient, neat, organised, hard-working, driven, hygenic perfectionist that sometimes lacks a sense of humour and fails to grasp the concept of sarcasm.
As most interesting people are, Kat is a contradiction in terms. In the three years that she has lived in South Africa she has learnt to speak South African English and surf so well that one could easily believe she is a surfer girl…
